Cat Relaxing on a Doorstep in Naxos

During a late afternoon walk through the main town of Naxos island, we came across this cat relaxing near some chatting neighbors. He obviously wasn't at all concerned about his human neighbors, but was maybe a little bit nervous about me getting too close with a camera. I took these shots with a telephoto zoom lens, in order to not scare the cat off of his comfortable perch.

First, a shot to set the scene. These narrow pedestrian passageways are very common on Naxos, especially near the Kastro (old Venetian-era Castle) area of the main port town.

And a close-up portrait...

Cat on Steps in Late Afternoon Sun

This cat - a pregnant female - was a 'resident' at the Hotel Keti on the island of Santorini. She was very friendly from the start, and soon became our hotel companion during the several days we spent here.

These steps lead out the back of the hotel, which has brilliant panoramic views of the blue water and volcanic caldera that make Santorini famous. I took this particular shot about an hour or so before sunset, lending the image the golden glow you see here.

I'll add more good shots of this cat later, but for now, consider this an introduction.

The Naxos Tree Scratcher

+
This cat appeared out of nowhere as we were exploring a small village in central Naxos, Greece. This perfectly curved small tree was obviously a favorite target for his scratching urges, and he dug into it with gusto for a few seconds... long enough for me to capture several images with a zoom lens at 200mm.

Welcome!

Greetings, and welcome to "The Greek Cat" blog!

The purpose of this blog is to share with you the best photographs from my travels with my wife in Greece, focusing primarily on high-quality portraits of the many cats we have encountered during our trips there.

If you've traveled in Greece before, especially on the islands, you've probably noticed that "stray" cats are seemingly everywhere. This has certainly been our experience, and I decided to make these Greek cats a focal point of my travel photography from the region. I'll include selected other photos from Greece from time to time as well.

I hope you enjoy these images, and welcome your comments and feedback!
